Treatment of Visual Deficits

Based on the results of the sports vision evaluation, remediation of any areas of deficiency can be addressed.

1. Treatments for deficits in visual acuity require a very detailed refractive analysis and treatment with either glasses or contact lenses to optimize the vision in each eye. It is expected that with the appropriate visual correction the athlete should be able to see at least 20/15 or better on a standard Snellen chart. Deficits in contrast can be addressed with various colored filters depending on the lighting conditions.

2. Treatment for deficits in binocular vision depend on the reason for the reduced performance. If suppression (the ignoring of the image from one of the two eyes)is the problem, then eye exercises designed to make both eyes work together can be used. In extreme cases patching of the stronger eye may be needed. If mis-alignment of the two eyes is the problem them special optical devices (prism)can be used in glasses to align the eyes. In extreme cases, eye muscle surgery may be need to align the eyes. Deficits in poor focusing can also be alleviated with specific eye exercises.

3. NeuroTracker is often used to treat deficits in visual processing and visual concentration.

4. There are a multitude of exercises to train eye/hand or eye/foot coordination and reaction time. BlazePods and shutter glasses are two techniques often used to improve coordination and reaction time.
